This course is for people working / training in the caring professions including Psychotherapists, Counsellors, Coaches, Social Workers, Nurses, Teachers and Pastoral Workers. On this 2-day course you will gain an in-depth understanding of how the independence-interdependence-codependence dynamic impacts all relationships, especially relationships of care and therapeutic alliance.

The concept of Codependency originated from observation of the rigidly destructive interactions that may occur within couples, families and organisations in response to coping with extraordinary needs. Tracking the patterns of codependent relating soon revealed that we may all have a tendency, in certain contexts or relationships, to find ourselves feeling compelled to repeat pain-preserving dynamics of caretaking, denial, obsession, defending and control.

This is an experiential training, during which you will have an opportunity to learn inside-out, from your own human needs for intimacy, belonging, meaning, freedom and security. Practical exercises will provide opportunities for trying out applications and integrating with your existing expertise.

The Trainer Pamela Gawler-Wright expands and integrates theoretical traditions, including developmental, neurological, existential and behavioural models to bring compassionate and effective interventions to facilitate the client’s self-balancing system to greater choice and integrity.

Course Content

Day 1 Understanding Codependency

  • Identifying Codependency and its Consequences
  • How Codependence develops and thrives on pain
  • Beyond 20th Century Pathology Thinking and “Selfishness”
  • Codependency in Attachment, “Addiction”, Family Systems and Cognitive-Somatic Models
  • Pros and Cons of a Recovery Model
  • Differentiating Codependence, Independence and Interdependence
  • The Codependency Trap in Psychotherapy and Counselling
  • Personal Exploration of Relationship Triggers and Patterns
  • Back-up Reading, Viewing and Exercises

There are different descriptions of the dynamics of codependency in many models of psychotherapy. Core concepts such as attachment, fusion, individuation, transference, addiction and self-other identities all touch on the dynamics present in codependent relating.

From accepting the dynamics of human dependence as irreducible paradoxes and intersecting spectra, we will hone our sensory and emotional awareness to guide us to real-time actions and communications that promote choice, respect, healing and growth.

Day 2  Working with Codependency

  • Identifying which clients benefit from working on Codependency
  • Gaining compassionate rapport with a person who is Codependent
  • Understand what helps your client – and what does not help
  • Staged Recovery from Codependency
  • Moving beyond blame, shame and claim
  • Releasing compulsive patterns that obstruct emotional healing
  • Healthy Boundaries and Trigger Contexts
  • Healing the Past, Making a Future, Claiming the Now
  • Repair of Identity, Family and Relationships
  • Encouraging New Experience of Sustainable Relating

To be at our most effective and appropriate to our client’s needs, we can acquire an understanding of the paradoxes of codependence, recognition when it is occurring and compassionate interventions for self, other and group when codependent patterns are driving feelings, thinking loops, compulsive actions and destructive interactions.

There are different positions about whether a client’s dependency patterns should be encouraged or managed when they become directed towards their therapist. We will explore the different needs and stages of recovery and the ethics of connecting without colluding.

Come away with increased clarity and confidence in how to recognise, hold and facilitate growth even for those clients who seem the most “stuck”.
